Speaking during a kgotla meeting at Kagiso Ward in Selebi Phikwe on Wednesday, he highlighted that he had received numerous reports from employees and community members indicating that some companies were engaging in unethical practices that undermined the workers wellbeing.
Some employees, he said were subjected to long working hours, insufficient wages and unsafe working environments that fostered fear and uncertainty.
He emphasised the importance of adhering to established labour practices and policies, calling for action to protect the rights and dignity of workers in the region.
“Employees are the backbone of the country’s economy, and such exploitation not only violates basic human rights, but also tarnishes the reputations of these companies and the town as an attractive place for employment opportunities,” he stated.
Mr Kaizer pledged to engage with relevant stakeholders to address such companies.
Additionally, he explained of plans to enhance safety in Selebi Phikwe by installing new streetlights in strategic locations and repairing non-functional ones.
He said the project would be funded through Constituency Community Project funds.
Highlighting government’s commitment to transparency, Mr Kaizer addressed the implications of the current national budget, which was constrained and may affect some development projects in the region.
Nonetheless, he acknowledged government’s dedication to fostering growth and infrastructure development, but noted that fiscal realities required tough decisions.
“Government financial resources are limited, which means that some of the projects we had anticipated maybe delayed,” he said.
Mr Kaizer reassured residents that government was seeking solutions and exploring alternative funding avenues. ENDS
