President Boko holds official talks with Hungarian president PM

13 Jun 2025

President Advocate Duma Boko this morning held official talks with Hungarian President Dr Tamas Sulyok and Prime Minister Mr Vicktor Okban at Sàndor Palace, the official residence and workspace of the President of Hungary in Budapest.

Prior to that, President Boko was treated to a welcome parade from the National Calvary Ceremonial Unit of the Hungarian Defence Force at Kossuth Lajos Square overlooking the Hungarian Parliament on the bank of River Danube.

While Botswana and Hungary established diplomatic relations in 1980, this is the first official visit by a head of state between the two countries, and President Boko discussed enhancing cooperation with both the Hungarian head of state (President Sulyok) and head of government (Prime Minister Okban).

A European Union state, Hungary has a strong export oriented manufacturing sector which includes automotive, energy, chemicals, fertiliser, food production and the information communication technology (ICT) sectors.

Botswana and Hungary have a Memorandum of Agreement on training, which currently has seen 17 Batswana studying in Hungary, 15 on scholarships organised by the Hungarian and Botswana governments and two self sponsored.

Ahead of the President's visit, Hungary has pledged to increase scholarships offered to Batswana studying in their institutions of higher learning in fields such as engineering and medicine.

President Boko will this afternoon market Botswana investment opportunities when he meets Mr Magyar Levente, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade alongside Mr Gabor Genei, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hungarian Export Promotion Agency as well as the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry accompanied by captains of industry from leading domestic companies.
