Okavango East Member of Parliament, Mr Gabatsholwe Disho has promised to engage the relevant authorities on how the deplorable state of schools and other government facilities in the area can be addressed.

In a kgotla meeting with Seronga residents yesterday, Mr Disho said Okavango District was faced with peculiar challenges compared to other parts of the country. He said the state of infrastructure had as a result affected service delivery. The MP had earlier on toured all schools and clinics in the constituency to appreciate their current state and attend to issues related to public service employees welfare. He said of concern was shortage of classrooms, lack of ablution facilities, as well as shortage of furniture and stationery.

Mr Disho said Ngambao Junior Secondary School in Seronga was beyond repair and inhabitable though it was operational. He therefore, said a lasting solution to the predicament would be the construction of a new junior secondary school in the village. Another issue of note was that some temporary teachers had not been paid their salaries for months.

Regarding the situation of health facilities, Mr Disho said most of the clinics were not capacitated with ambulances, making it difficult to transport patients on emergencies to Shakawe and Maun. Additionally, he said there was no medical doctor stationed in majority of clinics in the constituency. On a positive note, Mr Disho said the Mohembo-Gudigwa road had been approved for construction in the current financial year. He said the road project was on the district priority list and its completion would be of value to the district.

Kgosi Maeze Maeze of Seronga had in his welcome remarks raised concern on the status of Mohembo-Gudigwa road. Mr Maeze said the road was in a bad state and as a result, vehicles suffered regular breakdown. Kgosi Maeze said the state of the road also disadvantaged the constituency since it was not appealing to investors.

The Village Development Committee vice chairperson, Mr Gothusang Kehuparetse said most government departments in the area were faced with shortage of staff houses.  A resident of Seronga, Ms Keleapere Mokopi said the village deserved an additional primary and junior secondary school.  Another resident, Ms Reshando Motamma said parents should work closely with teachers to ensure children were disciplined and produced excellent results.
