The significant achievements of the Kweneng District economic summit, which convened on May 8 under the theme ‘Kweneng Rising: Advancing Economic Development for a Sustainable Future’ has been commended.

Speaking during the official opening of the Kweneng District Council full council meeting on Monday, council chairperson Councillor Ontefetse Rankhibidu said the forum has been instrumental in setting the tone on how to advance economic growth within the district.

He said the event which was hosted by the office of the Member of Parliament for Molepolole South Mr Shima Monageng in collaboration with Market Players, an entrepreneurial development entity, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including local businesses, government representatives, non-governmental organisations, and community leaders.

He said the collaboration had proven essential in addressing the unique economic challenges faced by the district and the participation of various sectors has enriched the dialogue and provided them with a holistic view of the economic landscape of Kweneng.

“One of the most notable achievements from this forum was the establishment of strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing local entrepreneurship. It is common knowledge that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs) are vital for job creation and economic resilience,” he said.

“As such, initiatives to provide training programmes for aspiring entrepreneurs are essential, focusing on skills development in areas such as business management, marketing strategies, and financial literacy,” Mr Rankhibidu said, noting that the programmes will empower community members to start their own businesses and contribute to the local economy.

Councillor Rankhibidu further said that it was their intention to create a comprehensive investment guide that outlines available opportunities and incentives for potential investors.

Thus, he said for the 2025/2026 financial year they shall begin a series of activities for the formulation of the Kweneng District local economic development strategy essential not only for driving economic growth but also for ensuring inclusive participation, environmental sustainability, institutional strengthening, job creation, and attracting investments.

He added that they addressed critical infrastructure needs during their forum, adding that improved transportation networks were identified as essential for facilitating trade and access to markets.

Councillor Rankhibidu said increased investment in road maintenance and development projects is vital as these will enhance connectivity within Kweneng District which is not only about roads but also encompasses better access to utilities such as water and electricity, which are key components of any thriving economy.

“As we move forward from this gathering, let us remain committed to implementing these initiatives with vigour and dedication.

Together, we can transform Kweneng District into a beacon of economic prosperity; a place where every community member has the opportunity to thrive,” said the chairperson. ENDS
