Council allocates P10m for road maintenance

20 May 2025

Government has allocated Kweneng District Council P10 million to undertake rood maintenance works for the 2025/26 financial year.

The funds will be used for maintenance works of A12 road, which include installation of edge beams, pothole patching and edge damage repairs as well as new asphalt surfacing.

This was said by Kweneng District Council chairperson, Mr Ontefetse Rankhibidu during a meeting on Monday.

Through the funding, he said they would reconstruct a culvert in Lentsweletau that collapsed during the rainy season and affected the community’s movement from one side of the village to the other.

He indicated that the P10 million provision would be supplemented with the 2025/2026 Road Fund Levy budget, which amount to over P2.8 million to implement the projects.

He also said the district also awaited the proposed construction of internal roads (25km) in Molepolole, which was at design stage.

He reminded the councillors that construction had been halted pending review of the Development Manager model.

Meanwhile, he said the council had initiated several immediate measures aimed at restoring accessibility and ensuring safety for all road users.

“We have mobilised resources and conducted assessments of the most severely affected areas and efforts based on urgency and impact on community access have been implemented through pothole patching and dam/culvert de-silting across the district,” he said.

Cllr Rankhibidu said the council officers were working to maintain their bituminised road.

The measures, he said were meant to ensure that there was little disruption to traffic flow and in relation to earth and sandy roads, he added they were working round the clock to maintain their plant and machinery for them to resume the maintenance schedule. ENDS
