Collaboration essential for district transformation
20 May 2025
Tsabong District Council chairperson has stressed the importance of engaging the private sector and strengthening partnerships with various stakeholders to advance the district’s development agenda.
Speaking during the full council meeting recently, Mr Elias Motlhanke said this collaborative approach was essential for transforming the district’s prospects and fostering economic growth.
In line with this vision, he said the council was formulating a Local Economic Development strategy focused on job creation, skills development, private sector involvement and attracting investment.
He also said the council had launched the ‘Own a Bin’ campaign so as to improve sanitation and boost revenue.
He noted that the initiative aimed at addressing the issue of inadequate waste receptacles in households, which had contributed to low compliance with sanitation fee payments.
Mr Motlhanke further confirmed that residents who paid their annual sanitation fee would receive a free waste bin, promoting responsible waste management and incentivising timely payments.
The council is also conducting weekly door-to-door awareness and clean-up campaigns and sharing educational materials to further support this effort, he said.
Furthermore, Mr Motlhanke revealed that the district faced challenges in the agricultural sector saying that late rains had significantly impacted crop production, delaying ploughing until December 2024.
Despite 125 farmers cultivating 422.47 hectares, very low production is anticipated. The dominant crops planted include cereals (219.25ha), legumes (112.72ha), and fodder (61.52ha), he said.
He said the council was also working on supporting farmers through the Temo Letlotlo Crop Management System Registration.
He pointed out that 732 farmers had registered with 91 fields, and 433 farmers had received grants, although only 125 managed to plough due to late rains.
Despite the challenges, Mr Motlhanke expressed the council’s commitment to finding innovative solutions and implementing strategies to improve the overall performance and development standards of the district.
He also emphasised the need for a united effort to achieve the district’s goals. ENDS
