Localise biodiversity conservation targets
14 May 2025
Stakeholders have been encouraged to localise the biodiversity conservation goals for effective implementation in their areas.
Speakig during consultative workshop on revising and updating the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) in Serowe on Monday, the Serowe district disability officer, Ms Ludo Mazongo said the workshop created an opportunity for the localisation of biodiversity conservation goals, which is essential for effective implementation.
She said that Serowe was an example of a community that embodied the intricate balance between development, farming activities and environmental conservation, but cautioned that, if unchecked, it would find itself facing the rapid changes that negatively impact biodiversity.
“With the rapid growth of the population and fast-paced urbanisation, we currently find ourselves facing challenges of inappropriate waste disposal, illegal mining of earth minerals such as gravel and pit sand, pollution and excessive veld product harvesting that throw the ecosystem out of balance,” she said.
Moreover, Ms Mazongo noted that as the District Commissioner’s office, they understood the importance of integrating biodiversity into local planning and decision-making. Therefore, she said they remained committed to working hand in hand with all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of NBSAP.
For his part, Dr Eagilwe Segosebe of EL MONDO Consultancy said that the consultancy workshop was part of a series of workshops on biodiversity conservation held in various locations across the country.
“The objective of this exercise is to sensitise stakeholders about the NBSAP and to gain insight into stakeholders’ perceptions regarding the current status and threats facing biodiversity. It also aims to engage them in developing strategic activities for the implementation of the NBSAP,” he said.
Dr Segosebe further noted that the exercise would help foster ownership and commitment during the implementation of the NBSAP at all levels in society. Additionally, he stated that although having diverse stakeholders at these workshops was commendable, there was a need for improved sharing of information regarding NBSAPs and biodiversity across all levels of governance to connect with the wider audience and guarantee that everyone was included in this initiative.
Acting Serowe District Agriculture Coordinator, Mr Kenneth Mabote urged stakeholders to wholeheartedly engage with the NBSAP, as without their dedication, no objective or strategy could be fulfilled. He reminded stakeholders that they played a crucial role in the country’s sustainable development. ENDS
