The Minister for State President, Mr Moeti Mohwasa has implored district leaders to prioritise key developments urgently needed by the communities they serve.
Mr Mohwasa said this at the district leadership consultation meeting on the National Development Plan 12 (NDP12), which was held for Hukuntsi and Mabutsane districts
He underscored the need for such consultations to foster and promote community inclusivity in district development planning.
“It is imperative for the community to be engaged in planning their own community projects.
This will inevitably necessitate significant developments that are of priority to those communities, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development,” he said. In that regard, the minister called on the leadership to consult with the community as they plan for their respective developments, and further advised that youth, private sector, parastatals and other key stakeholders be included in such planning processes.
“We want youth to be engaged in these processes as the primary beneficiaries and the future generation of our society,” he said.
Mr Mohwasa said that as such consultations commenced, the two districts should consider forging fronts and identifying projects of priority that were of mutual interest and able to benefit both communities.
He said the current government had a comprehensive package of reforms based on firm commitment to meritocracy, accountability and innovation, adding that in order to foster such, government had developed a Public Service Leadership Transformation Programme, which emphasises key areas such as project delivery, productivity, service delivery and employee engagement.
Mr Mohwasa shared that this programme was aimed at equipping leaders with necessary competencies to handle leadership challenges within the public service, adding that inputs, which would be made during these consultations were fundamental, as they would best advice the leadership.
“Government is committed to building a strong, efficient public sector for the effective delivery of services to its people and therefore I call on the leadership to foster an efficient and agile public sector,,” he said.
He therefore called on the officers to restore trust and good governance, revitalise the economy and work towards attracting investments as well as promoting equity through provision of social infrastructure.
Mr Mohwasa said as a means of making Botswana one of the most successful countries in the world, it was necessary to create an effective, efficient employee base, and therefore called for a revitalised, harmonious working relations, unity and cooperation within the public service.
In his closing remarks, the MP for Kgalagadi North, Mr Reason Lekhutlane mentioned the need for construction of Hukuntsi-Ncojane road, adding that the road has long been approved in the NDP 11 but had so far not been funded.
He noted that if constructed, the road had potential to boost economy as it would be able to connect other villages including Hunhukwe.
Mr Lekhutlane also noted that the Hukuntsi-Tsabong, and Hukuntsi-Gantsi through Hunhukwe road were crucial and needed to be constructed as accessible roads, which links tourists with the village, with potential to attract tourists.
He further shared that the district was still lagging behind in terms of developments, adding that priority should be made to cater for water and electricity in most villages as such commodities were of greater concern.
Hukuntsi District Commissioner, Ms Veronica Rabakane acceded to the minister’s advice and further made an assurance of the district commitment to engaging with relevant stakeholders in pursuing NDP 12 developments.
“We have taken heed of all the minister’s remarks and set ourselves to align with what the government desires and further consult and working with relevant stakeholders as advised,” she said. ENDS
