Ministry extends ploughing deadlines
05 Feb 2014
The Ministry of Agriculture has extended deadlines for ploughing and planting operations for 2013/2014 cropping season under the ISPAAD.
A statement from the ministry stated that the deadline for ploughing and planting south of the Dibete cordon fence had moved from January 31 to February 7.
The new deadline for areas north of Dibete cordon fence is February 22. The statement said the decision to extend the deadlines for ploughing and planting was a result of late rains in the southern part of Botswana and flooding in some parts of the north.
This situation led to the delay in the onset of the ploughing and planting operations. However, farmers should note that this was a special dispensation owing to the rainfall patterns. They were advised to plant early maturing varieties to beat the onset of frost.
Farmers and tractor owners should note that cut-off dates for ploughing and planting continue to be determined by the climatic conditions such as the onset of winter and reduction in day-length. Winter frost and shorter daylight inhibit plant growth and maturity.
In the southern part of Botswana, winter comes earlier than in the northern part, hence the different cut-off dates. The ministry says farmers who plough and plant after the deadlines will not benefit from ISPAAD. Ends
