Letlhakane magistrate remands murder accused in custody

02 Mar 2025

Boipuso Duma (40) of Mopipi was on Thursday further remanded in custody following the amendment of the charge sheet of the count he is facing from unlawful wounding to murder.

Letlhakane magistrate, Ms Tshidiso Molao said the court took the decision to further remand the accused because the offence is now a more serious one.

Particulars of the matter are that on January 21, in Mopipi, Duma caused grievous bodily harm to one Baleseng Madiwane (48) by stabbing him with a knife on the left shoulder, neck and stomach.

In the process, Tlhalosang Chechela (38), who is the girlfriend to the accused and mother of the deceased’s children, was also stabbed in the leg.

On February 17, Madiwane, who had been fighting for his life in hospital, succumbed to the three stab wounds.

Investigating officer in the matter, Sub Inspector Ottilia Toteng of Orapa police station, pleaded with the court to further remand Duma in custody, stating that tempers of the aggrieved family were still high, hence she feared for the safety of the accused should he be granted bail.

If released on bail, Inspector Toteng said the accused could also be a threat to the life of Chechela, the one who reported the matter to the police, and also happened to be his girlfriend.

Inspector Toteng stated that witnesses in the matter were children aged 9 and 14, currently going through counselling by social workers, therefore releasing Duma on bail might jeopardise the process.
Duma is set to appear in court again in March 13. ENDS
