Jwaneng hosts pool party

Jwaneng residents will this weekend throng Debswana club for a pool party.
The event possesses the characteristics of a family fun day and several artists have been included in the line-up, with renowned kwaito kwasa artist Vee being the main act. The fact that patrons have been advised to put on beach wear has caused mixed feelings among Jwaneng residents.
To young people such as the 23-year-old Howard Rakwadi, this kind of event is a welcome development in the diamond mining town. “It will enhance the already existing types of entertainment and as young people, we need diversity and the pool party has come at a good time,” he explained in an interview.
Howard also believes that young people will have the opportunity to interact with their counterparts from different places who will be coming specifically for this kind of entertainment. However, to the elderly residents, these kinds of events will add to the already wayward behavior in the youth.
“The pool party is a challenge to the Jwaneng community because our young people are going to take advantage and indulge in anti-social behavior such as alcohol abuse. They are going to take advantage of the event and I foresee a lot of them not spending nights at their homes,” said 47-year-old Kemoneilwe Molwantwa.
To her, the only type of entertainment befitting Jwaneng youth is at church, “our youth are so wayward they only need spiritual intervention not these pool parties.” Another elder, Lorato Motsaalore believes the pool party will only contribute to the escalating rates of Sexually Transmitted Illnesses (STIs) and teenage pregnancies which are already a challenge in Jwaneng.
“Since it’s a family fun day, even older men will have the opportunity to lure young girls into sexual encounters hence promoting intergenerational sex. These types of entertainments should just be banned because the next time it will be going to another place,” she lamented. ENDS
