Chairperson calls for collaboration to mitigate disasters

North West District Council (NWDC) chairperson, Mr Itumeleng Kelebetseng says there is need for collaboration of stakeholders to mitigate disasters. 

Mr Kelebetseng, who was speaking during the NWDC full council meeting recently, said heavy rains and storms experienced in the district from November 2024 caused destruction to some properties. 

He said about 63 households were affected and were assisted with tents and food baskets following the assessment by the relevant authority. 

Mr Kelebetseng said the rains caused damage to infrastructure such as roads, residential and business premises. 

The council chairperson said Maun internal roads and other roads that connected Tsau-Semboyo-Makakung , Samedupi-Somelo, Shorobe-Sankoyo-Mababe-Khwai roads were affected. 

Mr Kelebetseng said even though the District Disaster Management Team was on the ground to monitor the situation and to preserve lives, there was need for all stakeholders to work with the team. 

He said he appreciated the involvement of some business communities so far and government departments in sharing resources to help control water in flooded infrastructure. 

Mr Kelebetseng said good rains brought positive contributions to life but cautioned people to protect themselves and the environment. ENDS
