12 Jan 2025

Kanye’s very own rising star, Lesang Setlhaolo, better known as DJ Lez, is brimming with optimism for 2025. As the resident DJ at The Pound Restaurant in Gaborone, DJ Lez is optimistic that the year ahead will be filled with growth, creativity, and fresh opportunities.

The talented DJ embarked on his musical journey in 2017, teaching himself the craft before being mentored by some of Botswana’s finest, including DJ Lyric, DJ Scratch, Dejfro Srama, and DJ Zoskie.

Over the years, he has shared stages with renowned international acts like DJ Fresh, DJ Maphorisa, Sun-El Musician, Knight SA, and Tyler ICU. Driven by passion and dedication, DJ Lez aspires to showcase his creativity on a global stage. “Opening for DJ Fresh at KFX’s 3rd edition in 2023 was one of the greatest milestones of my career. DJ Fresh shared words of wisdom that transformed my perspective and pushed me to aim higher,” he revealed.

This past festive season DJ Lez was booked at Kanye’s biggest events, including the Kanye Festive Xplosion (KFX) on December 21, Heyana on December 28, and Hey Nyena and Friends on New Year’s Eve. Performing in front of large crowds and sharing the big stages with industry giants has been a dream come true for the young DJ.

“These events exposed me to new audiences and allowed me to elevate my craft,” he told BOPA.

Freddy ‘Draggie’ Rantlheng, KFX organiser and stage manager, stated that DJ Lez was a sought after talent at the festival beacuse “he is an impactful Gen Z DJ who resonates with the youth”.

“He’s versatile and one of Kanye’s most trusted and favourite DJs of the moment.

He’s been part of the KFX residency since 2022,” Rantlheng explained.

DJ Lez commended Kanye’s biggest festivals, KFX and Hey Nyna for spotlighting Kanye’s talent and providing unwavering support for local artists.

However, he also highlighted the challenges he has faced as an emerging artist.

“It’s tough to secure bookings without strong connections, and having a manager makes all the difference,” he said.

To aspiring DJs, DJ Lez offered this advice: “Network, stay committed to your craft, and take your work seriously. Success in the music industry demands both passion and discipline.” ENDS
