Sejelo Police Station in Kanye has reported a series of concerning crimes that included a suspected suicide, arson, and violent robbery.
On January 8, a 19-year-old man from Jae ward, Kanye, was found dead in an apparent case of suicide. Sejelo Police Station Commander, Superintendent Mogomotsi Matlapeng stated that the boy’s 75-year-old mother found him hanging from the rafters of their home after leaving him alone earlier in the day.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear, and investigations were ongoing.
In another incident on the same day, a 46-year-old woman from Tloung ward reported that her mud house at Diphiring farming lands was deliberately set on fire around 2pm.vThe blaze destroyed property valued at approximately P13 000.
Superintendent Matlapeng confirmed that no arrests had been made yet, but the investigations were ongoing. Superintendent Matlapeng also revealed details of a robbery involving a Ranaka Agricultural Extension Officer.
The official was attacked by people who followed him to his home, where he had gone to charge a government-issued tablet. The attackers made off with the tablet and two personal mobile phones. The stolen items are valued at around P28 000, including the P26 000 tablet.
“I strongly advise government officials to avoid taking government resources home, as this increases their risk of being targeted,” Superintendent Matlapeng cautioned.
He urged officials to ensure such assets are secured in workplaces with proper security measures to account for. He assured the public that all cases are being thoroughly investigated.
Superintendent Matlapeng also appealed for community cooperation to help bring perpetrators to justice and also reminded residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities. ENDS
