Legislators attend SADC-PF plenary assembly session

The ongoing 56th Plenary Assembly session of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, held in Livingstone, Zambia, is expected to promote the use of technology to enhance Parliamentary functions.
A press release from the National Assembly states the Botswana delegation, in attendance at the plenary assembly session comprises of MPs, among them Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Helen Manyeneng, Leader of Opposition, Mr Dumelang Saleshando, legislators Messrs Leepetswe Lesedi, Karabo Gare, and Mpho Morolong as well as the Clerk of the National Assembly, Ms Barbara Dithapo.
The release explains that the plenary will encourage legislatures across the region to adopt digital tools that streamline legislative processes, improve oversight and facilitate better engagement with citizens.
The meeting will also discuss ways to strengthen inclusivity in Parliamentary processes, leveraging on technology to ensure greater participation of underrepresented groups such as women, youth and persons with disabilities in legislative decision-making, it says.
According to the release, the assembly will further promote the use of innovation and digital platforms to make parliamentary proceedings and decisions more accessible to the public, thereby enhancing transparency in governance and holding elected officials accountable.
The release further states that the plenary will consider and adopt reports of the various standing committees of the forum, whose theme is: Leveraging Technology and Innovation for Smart, Inclusive and Responsive Parliaments in the SADC Region.
The team is expected back home on December 16. Ends
