Police search for rape suspect
06 Nov 2024
Police in Letlhakane are in search of a rape suspect who has been on the run since Sunday.
In an interview with BOPA, station commander, superintendent Michael Maphepu appealed to the public to assist with information on his whereabouts.
Superintendent Maphepu said the incident happened Saturday night at Khubesi cattlepost in the periphery of Letlhakane.
The suspect is said to be the boyfriend to the victim’s aunt.
Supt. Maphepu said the victim was a 17-year-old girl while the age of the suspect was not known yet.
He highlighted that the suspect sneaked out of their hut while the girlfriend was sleeping and went to the young girl’s hut where he raped her.
“Learning that the matter has been brought before the police, the suspect fled and has not been arrested yet. We suspect that he might be hiding in some of the ranches in the CKGR,” he said.
Supt. Maphepu noted that most of the rape incidents in his policing area took place at cattleposts.
He said the police had devised intervention strategies such as intensified public education using police volunteers living in such areas.
With that, Supt. Maphepu said his policing area had recently seen a slight decline in rape incidents. Ends
