Court convicts 10 Ethiopians for illegal entry

Ten Ethiopian nationals, who entered Botswana through an ungazetted point near Ramokgwebana on October 5, have been fined P1 500 or one-year imprisonment in default of payment.
Chief Magistrate Game Mooketsi of Francistown Magistrate Court ordered that the fine be paid not later than November 15.
She said the offence of illegal entry was increasing at a high rate in Botswana and could not be tolerated.
The 10 had pleaded guilty to the charge and prayed with the court to temper justice with mercy and impose a minimum fine sentence.
The accused, who were South Africa bound,were intercepted and arrested in Tonota by the police.
Illegal crossing into Botswana carries a fine not exceeding P10 000 or an imprisonment term not exceeding 10 years. Ends
