14 Oct 2024
Gweta Police Superintendent Geoffrey Mafa has confirmed that the fire that broke out along the A3 road between Phuduhudu and Gweta, has affected areas near Nxai Pan and Makgadikgadi National Parks on Sunday.
He said the cause of the fire was unknown and firefighting teams, including police and disaster response units from Gweta and Phuduhudu, were currently working to extinguish the flames.
“These teams composed trained firefighters, but their efforts are being hampered by strong winds,” he said.
The fire has also affected areas populated by wildlife, he said.
Superintendent Mafa said extinguishing the fire was challenging during the day and more favourable at night.
He thanked community members for their assistance in combating the blaze. Ends
