Shamukuni attends UNHCR conference

Minister of Justice, Mr Machana Shamukuni, is in Geneva, Switzerland, to participate in the 75th session of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Executive Committee (ExCom) programme, scheduled from October 14-18.
A statement from the Ministry of Justice, says the ExCom serves as a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly, convening annually to review and approve the UNHCR’s programmes and budget.
The committee also provides advice on international protection and engages in discussions with both intergovernmental and non-governmental partners on various issues. The release says Minister Shamukuni is expected to deliver a statement onaz Botswana’s successful initiatives aimed at integrating refugees into the national development agenda.
He will also address the ongoing operations of the UNHCR in Botswana and the significant milestones achieved in finding long-lasting solutions to the challenges faced by refugees.
In addition the minister will engage in a bilateral discussion with the UNHCR Assistant Commissioner for Protection, focusing on collaboration efforts in refugee protection and management.
Minister Shamukuni will also attend the Nansen Refugee Awards ceremony, recognising individuals and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the protection of refugees, forcibly displaced persons, and stateless individuals.
The minister and his delegation are scheduled to return to Botswana on October 20. Ends
