A defence witness in the P2.3 million Turnrite Mall cash-in-transit robbery, Tebogo Tsekane (41) has exonerated Mothusi Matomela from taking part in the robbery.
Appearing before Broadhurst Magistrate Court on September 18, Tsekane said Matomela was framed by the police in a desperate attempt to make an arrest.
He said on the day of the alleged crime, they were towing Matomela's broken vehicle next to Solomon Dihutso Primary School in Mogoditshane, where he was operating a garage, adding that he was driving the other car while Matomela was driving the towed car.
He said around Lamila Lodge, they saw a commotion of people, both young and old, heavy police presence and helicopter hovering, which made him leave Matomela in the car to watch the scene.
He said he was later surprised to see Matomela pinned to the ground, handcuffed and searched.
“There was nothing I could do rather than to wait for a moment like this to give true evidence of events that happened on 13 October 2021,” adding that Matomela was framed by the police out of desperation to make an arrest.
Matomela, Thapelo Lekobe, Mzwandile Mazibuko and Elliot Ntshalintshali are charged with robbing a G4S Security vehicle on October 13, 2021.
The trial continues on September 20 as the defence continues to call its witnesses. Ends
