Govt budgets P150m for maintenance projects

Ministries of Education and Skills Development and Local Government and Rural Development are providing housing accommodation for secondary and primary school teachers respectively.
This was said by Minister of Education and Skills Development Minister, Dr Douglas Letsholathebe when answering a question in Parliament on Wednesday.
“My ministry is aware of the status of teachers’ accommodation throughout the country and the maintenance requirements for the houses,” Dr Letsholathebe said.
He added that during the current financial year 2024/2025, an estimated budget of P150 million would be used to maintain teachers’ houses.
“Under this budget, there are 10 junior secondary schools’ maintenance projects at adjudication stage of tendering and four senior Secondary Schools maintenance at different stages of procurement,” he added.
Dr Letsholathebe added that the ministry would include maintenance of teachers’ houses in the planned National Development Plan.
He told Parliament that maintenance of academic and staff houses at junior secondary schools were all at adjudication stage of procurement and they included Mokgalo Junior Secondary School in Lecheng, Tashata JSS in Tati Siding, Shakawe JSS in Shakawe, Chobe JSS in Kasane, Itekeng Junior School in Ghanzi, Tsabong Unified Secondary School in Tsabong, Baitirile JSS in Moshupa, Mogobane JSS in Mogobane, Linchwe JSS in Mochudi and Mogoditshane JSS in Mogoditshane.
He said maintenance included staff houses only at senior secondary schools and among them 88 at McConnell College in Tutume while tendering was expected at the third quarter of the current financial year.
Also, he said 90 staff houses were being maintained at Lobatse senior secondary and the project was at evaluation stage. He also told Parliament that maintenance of 88 staff houses at Lotsane SSS in Palapye was completed last year while maintenance of 64 staff houses at Kgari Sechele II SSS in Molepolole was at evaluation stage.
Kgalagadi South MP, Mr Sam Brooks had asked the minister if he was aware that teachers’ accommodation at both primary and secondary schools were in bad situation across the country and when he intended to address the situation, given that a budget was set aside for the projects in the current financial year.
