Mozambique President, Mr Filipe Nyusi, whose term of office ends in October this year has been commended for the exceptional work undertaken during his tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi praised President Nyusi during his three-day State Visit to Mozambique.
“Having a voice from African nations on the Security Council is imperative, and Mozambique has executed its duties with excellence and aplomb. It is vital that we persist in our engagement and pursuit of a permanent seat on the Security Council,” President Masisi said.
Furthermore, President Masisi said Botswana would continue to support Mozambique and stood ready to help the country in finding a sustainable solution to combat terrorism in the northern region of Mozambique.
He said while Botswana and Mozambique already enjoyed strong bilateral relations, it remained vital for the two countries to collaborate with their neighbouring countries to reinforce cooperation and advance regional economic prosperity.
In that regard, he mentioned the Techobanine Tripartite Summit between Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe scheduled for today during which there would be signing of documents regarding the deep port project and railway line.
He explained that the initiative, which has faced delays over the years, holds the potential to enhance international trade by linking the three to the markets in the east through Mozambique.
On other news, he said last June he witnessed the momentous occasion signifying the occasion of the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration phase of the ex-combatants of the National Resistance of Mozambique, RENAMO.
The crucial process, he said, heralded a glimmer of hope for enduring peace and reconciliation among various political factions in the country.
He said respect for human rights, adherence to the rule of law, and a fair global economic and political framework were important.
“We believe in fostering relationships between nations, regardless of their size, their strength, their length as in the case of Mozambique, or wealth, based on multilateralism and steering away from unilateral approaches,” he said. Ends
