Botswana makes strides in environment conservation

Minister of Environment and Tourism, Mr Dumezweni Mthimkhulu, says Botswana has made significant progress Botswana has made in tackling various environmental challenges.
The minister was speaking at the second session of Botswana Sustainability Week in Gaborone, yesterday.
He emphasised that efforts to address issues such as water scarcity, land degradation, loss of biodiversity, climate change, waste management, and environmental education have been successful thanks to ongoing collaboration with the private sector, civil society, and local communities.
Mr Mthimkhulu underlined the vital role of these stakeholders in ensuring sustainable development and the preservation of Botswana’s natural resources. He stressed the importance of protecting the environment and fragile ecosystems like the renowned Okavango Delta, which are crucial for the country’s economy, particularly its tourism sector.
The theme of the Sustainability Week, Investing in ESG and Sustainability: Aligning Profitability with Positive Environmental and Social Impact, aligns closely with the Ministry’s goals of environmental protection and sustainable development. Mr Mthimkhulu emphasized that this approach considers not only financial returns but also the broader impacts of daily operations on the environment, society, and governance practices.
Furthermore, he emphasised the significance of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into business strategies, noting that such integration can lead to long-term value creation, effective risk management, enhanced reputation, and increased appeal to investors and customers prioritizing sustainability.
Mr Mthimkhulu reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices, protecting the planet, and ensuring a brighter future for upcoming generations. He highlighted ongoing policy developments related to water resource management, sustainable land use, disaster preparedness, and the transition to renewable energy sources as part of Botswana’s efforts to combat environmental challenges.
The Sustainability Week served as a platform to foster partnerships, share knowledge, and explore innovative solutions aimed at steering Botswana towards a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.ENDS
