Motorists assault officers

06 Jan 2014

Two Maun police officers were assaulted by four unknown culprits at Disana ward during Christmas holidays.

The station commander for Maun Police Station, Superintendent Kenanao Badumetse, said the assault took place when the officers tried to stop a motor vehicle which was moving without the headlights on. The officers also wanted to warn the driver about livestock on the roads.

Supt Badumetse said when the driver refused to stop, the police followed the car which suddenly stopped and its occupants assaulted the officers with sticks and threw stones at them. However, the police officers escaped but later traced the suspects until two of the four men were arrested. The Corolla they were using was later found abandoned in the bush.

The police officers were treated for injuries at Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital. In a related incident, a crew of police officers was assaulted by three men at Matsaudi, a village that lies along the Maun/Shorobe road.

Supt Badumetse said the police wanted to search the vehicle in which the culprits were driving. One of the police officers suffered a back injury as a result of a bite by a culprit. The police were able to search the vehicle and found two elephant trophies and arrested two of the three men: a Motswana and a Zimbabwean while the third man, a Zambian, escaped.  ENDS
