05 Jan 2014
Humana People to People has decided to plant 600 000 trees across the country, in an effort to curb global warming.
The organisation’s deputy director, Ms Galenkgope Kebonang said of the 600 000 trees to be planted, 2 500 would be planted in some villages under the Palapye Administration Authority. They would include herbal and fruit trees which would be planted in Palapye, Radisele, Topisi and Lecheng.
She said the 2 500 trees that would be planted would play an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The tree planting exercise, Ms Kebonang said, would be done with communities in those villages. She said the organisation would ensure that the trees were planted properly and taken care of.
She said Humana People to People was working with the village leadership in communities where the trees would be planted. “We want people to take this very serious and we are going to make follow ups to ensure that these trees survive,” she said.
She said her organisation had planted trees in various schools and clinics in the country. She said communities would be taught how to plant and take care of the trees and the reasons behind planting trees.
Ms Kebonang said her organisation addressed issues of the environment because it was an important aspect when dealing with health issues. She said global warming was a serious phenomenon and that it would result in extreme conditions such as floods and more diseases. ENDS
