Special needs education plays a crucial role in ensuring that all students, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, have access to quality education and the opportunity to reach their full potential.

These sentiments were expressed by senior lecturer - special and inclusive education specialist at the University of Botswana, Dr Mpho Otukile-Mongwaketse during a handover of a special classroom unit at Marulamantsi Junior Secondary School in Gaborone recently.

Dr Otukile-Mongwaketse said it was important for Batswana to embrace special education because it embodied the principle of equity in education.

“Every child deserves the support and resources they need to succeed. It helps us foster empathy, understanding and inclusivity within our communities,” she said.

She thanked the Japanese Embassy for the donation which she said would have an impact on the entire school.

“Apart from creating an inclusive educational environment, it will benefit by creating a space for teaching special education students effectively. It will also contribute towards creating accessible facilities within the school. This ensures equal access by enabling students with special needs full participation in all aspects of the school life,” she said.

She therefore, called on individuals, businesses and charitable organisations to help sensitise people about special education issues, saying that would dispel misconceptions and promote a more inclusive mindset.

She added that their contribution would create an environment where special needs students felt valued, respected and included in a place where they could truly to shine and at the same time promote acceptance and celebrate diversity.

“It is important for everyone to recognise that every student regardless, has unique talents and potential waiting to be unleashed. Students with special needs can thrive academically, socially and emotionally,” she said. Ends
