Tsogwane cautions churches against money laundering

01 Apr 2024

Churches have been advised to be vigilant against unscrupulous individuals who continue to exploit them for laundering illicit funds obtained through illegal means, as this undermines government efforts to combat money laundering.

Speaking during the Good Friday commemorations at Holy Bontle Apostolic Church in Zion, held in Rakops, Vice President Mr Slumber Tsogwane highlighted money laundering as one of the country’s significant challenges impacting the church.

He mentioned that, under the leadership of President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, the government had enhanced money laundering regulations following the country’s grey listing in October 2018.

Following this, a plan of action was implemented to align the country’s financial regulations with global standards, leading to the country being delisted in October 2021.

Mr Tsogwane said it was important for churches to  comply with regulations to prevent future grey listings,  emphasising the potential negative impacts on the economy and NGOs, including churches, which rely on donations.

As the area Member of Parliament, Mr Tsogwane stressed the church’s role in combating societal issues like drug abuse, alcoholism, violence, and accidents, particularly during holidays. He commended Holy Bontle Apostolic Church in Zion for adhering to guidelines such as ensuring KYC compliance for all donors across its 36 branches.

The Vice President also called on government bodies to collaborate closely with NGOs like churches to ensure full compliance with anti-money laundering regulations and strengthen their capacities.

Moreover,  Mr Tsogwane urged the congregation and leadership to actively participate in the mindset change campaign and donated P4000 towards the church’s water bills.

Kgosi Ditshego Ramakhubu of Rakops encouraged church leaders and members to engage in nation-building efforts, especially focusing on the youth, while also emphasising the church’s critical role in shaping society’s image.

Rakops Station Commander Zibani Basupi appealed to the church to include prayers against crime in Rakops, particularly addressing issues like stock theft within the community. Ends
