Boteti District Council sitting on a deficit over P219 million

Boteti District Council is owing creditors about  P219 694 964 as at the end of March 2023, the council chairperson Mr Molemi Galeragwe informed the council session in Letlhakane recently. 
Mr Galeragwe stated that the deficit was still growing and noting council could eventually fail to pay creditors.
He said the council had an approved budget allocation of P140.4 million for the year 2023/2024 which included Revenue Support Grant (RSG) amounting to P132 427 750 and own source at P8 013 480.
The chairperson said at the end of February, RSG amounting to P137 751 440 was received and a P160 889 226.67 against a target of P128 737 794.17 was spent on recurrent budget, translation of 124.9 per cent expenditure. He said council managed to collect P2 469 124 against a target of P7 345 690 translating to 33.6 per cent collection rate or an under collection of 66.4 per cent.
Furthermore,  he said beneficiaries accessing social protection services had been assisted 100 per cent through various programmes within the department. Such he said included but not limited to 2 719 destitute persons, 151 temporary destitute persons, 2 601 orphans, 674 RADS hostel pupils and 271 children in need of care.
He noted however that challenges such as beneficiaries’ reluctance to register for electronic coupon, non-compliance by some suppliers to supply procured services and over-expenditure that arose from budgetary constraints. He said out of the allocated P11 093 500 expenditure stood at 21 262 552 which translated to 191.7 per cent.  BOPA
