The Own a Dustbin initiative, which the Kgatleng District Council has been promoting for several years, is aimed at encouraging residents to ensure proper disposal of waste generated from their households.
Kgatleng District Council Chairperson Mr Daniel Molokwe said on Monday during his speech to commence the full council session that the council had been able to accomplish this through donations of used oil containers from donors and stakeholders across the country who share a commitment to environmental sustainability. “However, as we speak, our efforts to revitalise this initiative are currently hindered by the lack of available waste receptacles. But this should not deter us from our ultimate goal of promoting responsible waste management practices within our community,” he said.
Mr Molokwe urged everyone to make earnest efforts in providing waste bins and making arrangements with the council or any other licensed private waste collector for regular removal of waste.
He said this was not a matter of choice as it was enshrined in the District Refuse Bye-Laws. He pointed out that failure to comply with the byelaw on waste disposal could attract a fine of P1 000.
Mr Molokwe stated that the council’s was not be to impose fines but to foster a culture of environmental stewardship and community wellbeing.
“Let us also actively seek partnerships and collaborations with local businesses, industries, and organizations. Their support, through donations, sponsorships, or other forms of collaboration, can significantly contribute to acquiring more waste receptacles and strengthen our overall waste management system,” he said.
