Oral Health Day commemoration today
19 Mar 2024
Botswana will today join other countries in commemorating the World Oral Health Day themed: A Happy Mouth is a Happy Body, held annually on March 20.
“This day marks the initiation of a year-long campaign, aimed at fostering awareness about oral health issues and inspiring action towards healthier oral care practices,” states a press release from the Ministry of Health.
It says the campaign sets the tone for a three-year initiative (2024-2026).“The focus is on highlighting the complex connection between oral health and overall well-being. The messages being shared are also meant to empower individuals worldwide, to prioritise and maintain optimal oral hygiene,” states the press release.
The press release says oral diseases are a major health concern globally as they impact on lives and livelihoods throughout a person’s life.
“These conditions normally lead to pain, discomfort, social isolation, and loss of self-confidence as well as other serious health issues.”
It is, therefore, crucial to recognise that most oral health conditions are preventable and treatable, when addressed in their early stages. Meanwhile the ministry urges members of the public to practice good oral hygiene by incorporating proper tooth brushing and flossing into daily routines, eating a balanced diet which is low in sugar content and engage in moderate alcohol consumption. The ministry also urges the public to go for dental check-ups every six months and quit all forms of tobacco use. ENDS
