Uncollected Omang cards worrisome

Department of Civil and National Registration district office in Serowe currently has a total of 1,095 uncollected national Identity Cards as of February 16 this year.

The department is engaging with citizens through various communication channels such as press releases, social media, and spot announcements to urge them to collect their identity cards. 

Serowe district councilors have also been urged to encourage citizens who have applied for identity cards to collect them promptly, especially considering the upcoming national general elections where these cards are crucial.

During the recent full council meeting in Serowe, Serowe District council chairperson, Mr Keneilwe Monageng emphasiSed the importance of timely collection and renewal of identity cards.

 He highlighted that government had extended working hours to facilitate mass registration and collection of identity cards.

 He said during the extension period, 89 people registered for ID cards while 97 collected their cards

 Furthermore, he advised the public to renew cards at least three months before the expiry dates.

Mr Monageng also addressed the issue of the Married Persons Property Act, mentioning the 24-month moratorium that allowed for registration of property instruments, which is set to expire on 15 July 2024. 

He urged couples who have not registered their property to do so before the deadline and emphasised that there are currently 114 uncollected Married Persons Property Instruments in the Serowe office dating back to 2003.

Additionally, Mr Monageng encouraged eligible individuals to participate in the supplementary national registration taking place from February  26 to March  15. 

“This registration is not polling station-based but is being conducted in three offices located at Serowe South, North, and West, all based at the Rural Administration Centre (RAC).

Mr Monageng emphasized the importance of registering in the constituencies of one’s principal residence to ensure a clean voters’ roll for free and fair elections ahead. 

“While we appreciate the role played by those encouraging people to come and register, I on the same vein, encourage people to register in constituencies of their principal residence, together we can maintain a clean voters roll,” he said. Ends
