Women have been hailed for their strength, courage and resilience in their accomplishments across various fields.

Speaking at the commemoration of the International Women's ’s Day hosted by RB2 in Gaborone on Friday, Assistant Minister for State President, Ms Boitumelo Gofhamodimo said when placed at the forefront, women prove their capabilities.

“They have the ability to change situations (baka nowa moro) and we are able to take the nation far,” she said.

Ms Gofhamodimo said women played a significant role in trade and agriculture as producers, adding that majority operated in the informal sector. She highlighted that 70 per cent of women were in informal cross-border trade, saying in the SADC region, 30-40 per cent of trade was generated by women.

Ms Gofhamodimo said in the Agricultural sector, more than 60 per cent of women contributed to the largest labour force in Africa.

Meanwhile, Ms Gofhamodimo said Botswana was doing well as 45 per cent of senior positions were occupied by women.

Nevertheless she emphasised on the need for women to be involved in the political landscape to change the nation's outlook and policies so as to create an inclusive, equitable and secure environment for all.

She said the inclusion of women in politics was one crucial element that had been lagging behind, adding that the gap remained wide. She therefore urged women to be involved in politics in large numbers.

Ms Gofhamodimo also called on women to affiliate and belong to associations, which she said could help them to grow.

She further encouraged women in the creative sector to continue with what they do best and utilise available opportunities to elevate their lives.

The day was commemorated under a theme; Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress, which she said focused on addressing economic disempowerment and emphasized the importance of including women, fostering a sense of belonging, relevance and empowerment. Ends
