Entrepreneurs challenged to form associations
05 Mar 2024
Entrepreneurs in Gumare have been advised to form associations, as having one voice can help them in making impactful representations to relevant authorities.
Entrepreneurs in the supply business could form small groups under their respective categories to help determine pricing.
Okavango District Council (ODC) nominated councilor Ms Keokeditswe Rangosa emphasised this during a meeting with entrepreneurs organised by ODC on Monday.
In his welcoming address, ODC chairman Mr Gaopalelwe Ronald urged entrepreneurs doing business with the council to focus on delivering quality work, particularly in construction projects.
Mr Ronald also cautioned against ‘tender-preneurs’ engaging in fronting practices, which he noted were prevalent in the district.
He highlighted that fronting could lead to a monopolistic situation, which goes against the principle of equal opportunity for all companies.
Touching on other issues, the chairperson encouraged residents to participate in the ongoing supplementary voter registration, emphasising that this might be their last chance to do so.
Some residents raised concerns about the professionalism of ODC in awarding tenders and delays in payments to suppliers.
Entrepreneur Mr Kitso Frecky emphasised the need for ODC to ensure transparency in the tender awarding process, as some tenders were seemingly granted to undeserving individuals.
Mr Omponye Sefo expressed disappointment in the lack of local empowerment in Gumare, stating that most job opportunities were given to individuals from outside the area.
Ms Kemmonye Kadizwara brought up the issue of uneven distribution of tenders among suppliers, noting that some were favored while others were overlooked during shortages.
Another entrepreneur Mr Mosegofatsi Mophale highlighted the issue of delayed payments to entrepreneurs and the potential compromise of quality by bidders who underquote to win contracts. ENDS
