PPC Cement donates to Dyslexia and Social Support Service Botswana

PPC cement has donated school necessities, which include books, bags, tables, chairs and uniforms to Dyslexia and Social Support Service Botswana.
Speaking at the donation ceremony, Dyslexia Botswana director, Ms Letang Jiri said the organisation had assessed 69 schools and it was found that most pupils did not have a disability but the challenge was that classes were too big for teachers to attend all learners.
She further stated that last year, the 69 schools assessed attained about 47 As and the 67 schools attained a 100 per cent pass rate. The director this year’s theme was Early Intervention is Key.
She explained that the Village Development Committee donated the place the organisation was using even though the place is small.
Meanwhile, PPC General Manger, Mr Tuelo Botlhole said PPC existed ‘to empower people to get a better life’.
He said the donated items cost more than P170 000.
He advised pupils to work hard, adding that ‘the sky is the limit’.
Giving testimony, a parent, Ms Naledi Moabi thanked the organisation for teaching her dyslexic child to read and write, saying as he was not able to read from Standard 2 to Standard 5.
She said in Standard 5 her son was assessed and started taking classes at the organisation after school.
She further said he was always the last one in class during tests. However, after attending classes at the organisation he went from being a grade E pupil to D, in Standard 6, he obtained C in term 1, term 2 he got a B, and a B+ in term 3.
Ms Moabi thanked the school for helping her son, who is currently Standard 7, to get improve his grades.
She lastly advised parents to not give up on their children.
Ms Moilatshimo, who has been volunteering for two years at the organisation, stated that she was one of the teachers chosen to be part of Dyslexia Advocate programme in Africa in which they will be trained.
She further said the organisation had helped many learners with some having graduated from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, University of Botswana, technical colleges.
She said one of the former learners had written a book about Dyslexia, which showed how much change the organisation brought.
Dyslexia and Social Support Service Botswana is a trust, non-profit making organisation that deals with children with learning disabilities.
The organisation is based in Mmatseta where it is running remedial classes for children with learning disabilities.
