Masisi attends United Nations Environment Assembly

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi left for Nairobi, Kenya yesterday to participate at the Sixth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 6) .

A press statement from Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Dr Masisi will deliver Botswana’s Statement at the High-Level Segment today, where among others, he will highlight ways in which Botswana is addressing environmental challenges and contributing towards international environmental governance.

Also, the statement says, on the sidelines of the assembly Dr Masisi will hold bilateral talks with the President of Kenya, Dr William Ruto.

Furthermore, whilst in Kenya President Masisi will visit the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC), with the aim to explore ways in which Botswana and Kenya can enhance cooperation in the agricultural sector particularly in animal husbandry, dairy and beef production.

Held under the theme; Effective, Inclusive and Sustainable Multilateral Actions to Tackle Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss and Pollution, UNEA 6 brings together heads of state, government ministers, business leaders, and environmental activists from around the world.

The United Nations Environment Assembly is the leading global decision-making body on environmental issues.

According to the statement this sixth session will among others, consider resolutions on desertification, air pollution, and biodiversity loss.

“It will also place particular focus on environmental multilateralism to underscore the importance of multilateral action when tackling the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, pollution and waste, ”the statements reads.

Dr Masisi is accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Lemogang Kwape, Minister of Justice, Mr Machana Shamukuni, as well as senior government officials. 

The President and his delegation will return to Gaborone on March 2.  Ends
