Botswana remembers fallen heroes

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, also Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces alongside First Lady Neo will today grace the commemoration of the annual Fallen Heroes Day at Parliament grounds.

A press statement from the Botswana Defence Force says the commemorative events will also be held at various places around the country including the 2 Military Garrison in Francistown, Eastern Military Garrison in Selebi Phikwe, Thebephatswa Air Base in Kweneng and Lesoma Memorial Site in Lesoma.

Fallen Heroes Day commemorations started on February 27, 2011, as a remembrance of 15 BDF members who lost their lives during the Lesoma ambush on February 27, 1978.

The press statement further states that following the initial commemoration, a deliberate decision was taken to honour all the heroes and heroines whose acts of valour preserved the Republic of Botswana as a free, independent and sovereign state.

Other dignitaries expected at the event are the Vice President Mr Slumber Tsogwane and wife,Ms Magdeline Tshambane-Tsogwane, Chief Justice, Speaker of the National Assembly, Cabinet Ministers, Members of the Defence Council and defence attaches amongst others.

According to the press statement, members of the public are encouraged to bring flowers to lay at the monuments from 7am to 5 pm. Ends
