25 Feb 2024
Constituency Community Project (CCP) are a government initiative aimed at empowering communities and strengthening the process by which citizens took the lead in the development of their localities.
Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Setlhabelo Modukanele said during the launch of P10 million Bontleng and Babusi ward road projects in the Gaborone South Constituency recently.
Mr Modukanele, said the overall objective of CCP was to improve the economic and social welfare of the people in urban and rural areas.
He also said CCP was done through the implementation of small infrastructure projects with a view to create employment opportunities based on the needs of the communities.
Therefore, he said, prioritised projects should be identified by the communities who had a major role in selecting the projects in their respective wards.
He said government made a decision to use the 2023/2024 Constituency Community Project budget to maintain roads as they were in a bad state.
He said CCP was funded under the development budget with funds for each financial year released to councils for implementation.
In Gaborone, he said maintenance works included chip-seal, asphalt overlay, pothole patching as well as paving depending on the condition of the identified road.
He also said the CCP has had challenges since its inception in 2017/2018 leading to slow implementation of projects and backlog. However, he said they continued to monitor implementation to ensure that those projects were completed.
Gaborone South MP and Assistant Minister for State President, Mr Dumizweni Mthimkhulu said he was pleased that one of the project conditions was that it should be undertaken by residents of the benefiting community.
He said they were earnest in improving the livelihoods of the people.
Artisan engaged in the project, Mr Moemedi Boifang, said they had committed to employ residents of the area.
Other launches were undertaken in Gaborone Bonnington North wards, Gaborone North wards and Gaborone Central wards. ENDS
