Meet the poet of Monarch street
12 Dec 2013
Ofentse Mathambo, better known by his sobriquet, Boi Terg in the dusty streets of Monarch in Francistown has established himself as one the budding m’rapper who aims to revive the legacy of a genre which is on the brink of collapse.
Inspired by the legacy of revered American hip hop artistes in the mould of controversial lyricist, Marshal Mathers, known by the stage name Eminem and Curtis Jackson who trades by the tag, 50 Cent, Mathambo intends to portray life’s frustrations, joy and all the spirit with which it is presented in his society, something that he plans to encapsulate in his lyrics with sheer brilliance.
Mathambo is a product of Francistown or Ghetto’s inner city life and his journey through the second city’s streets has compelled him to put the story down in a song. Born in a not so well-off family and raised by a widowed mother, Boi Terg intends to put food on the table through his talent.
Due to its ability to offer a selfless freedom of speech, Mathambo intends to use hip hop or motswako as it is called in this part of the world to send the message with the energy and passion of a musical and cultural revolution.
“I want to show my society’s social ills and may be come up with better ways of improving our living standards,” added the young rapper.
Born and bred in Francistown, Mathambo joins a clique of other Francistowners with strong ties in the hip hop culture in the likes of Apollo Diablo, Bicko G and the free flowing Kalanga lyricists Sickbunch of the Ako le ntheetseng fame. The 20 year old youngster who just completed his form five at Francistown Senior Secondary School, worked with the reputable producer, Oskido Taufuna from Zimbabwe, who helped him arrange his work.
Quizzed on what his future ambitions are now that the music industry is saturated, the soft spoken youngster is quick to point out that he plans on enrolling for a business management course and maybe as he dreams of owning a recording studio one day. In his single dubbed ‘Havanna door’, Boi Terg has coined the song in such a way that it sounds like an Setswana/English code mixed sentence ‘ga ba na door’ which loosely translates to ‘they have lost direction’. ‘Vano rwadziwa neni?’, so goes the chorus of his self-acclaimed smash hit, which is a direct scorn of his detractors asking ‘ba bolaiwa ke eng?’ His journey started in 2005 while he was still a student at Monarch Primary School and was discovered and inspired by a certain Morongwa, only known as Top G in their street.
Closer to home, Boi Terg takes time to listen to some of the proponents of Motswako in Jabulani Tsambo, popualry known as HHP of the Bosso ke Mang fame and other upcoming motswako freestylers, Notshi and Element. ENDS
