WUC commissions Kasane water treatment plant
23 Jan 2024
Water Utilities Corporation is currently conducting testing and commissioning of the Kasane water treatment plant which involves several stages that would eventually see water distributed to all villages in Chobe District.
Speaking at a kgotla meeting in Kasane recently WUC general manager-Kasane, Mr John Froese said the commissioning of the plant commenced in December and it progressed well.
He said in mid-January water was distributed to the rest of Kasane including Plateau, Flowertown and Kazungula adding that the commissioning exercise would culminate end of January.
Mr Froese pointed out that water had also reached Ngoma storage tanks from where it would be distributed to Chobe Enclave villages from Mabele, Kavimba, Kachikau, Satau and Parakarungu.
He informed residents that as per the testing regulations, the old Kasane plant was kept running during the commissioning process until the new plant was fully operational. He explained that this meant that water from the old plant would mix with water from the new extraction point at Chobe River.
He assured the residents that the new plant encompassed a state of the art water treatment process and cutting edge technologies, hence water discoloration common in Chobe would be a thing of the past as the new plant incorporated an impeccable reverse osmosis.
Kasane water treatment plant commenced in 2020 with the project scope encompassing extraction of four million litres a day from Chobe River, a filter building, 32 million litres capacity clearwater tank, a laboratory and chlorine station. The plant incorporates technology advancement, technical and automated systems, as well as mechanical telemetry that integrate digitization. Pertaining to sewage spillages experienced in Kasane he stated that the corporation had observed an unpleasant trend of people throwing prohibited materials into the sewage system.
He stated on many occasions the corporation was called to attend to blockages and spillages which turned out to be a result of objects like clothes, bottles, stones and wood that were flushed and thrown in the system.
Mr Froese said because the Kasane sewage system was an imported system, its spare parts could only be ordered from abroad, and therefore the public should desist from vandalizing it. ENDS
