Okavango councillors welcome new logo

14 Dec 2023

Okavango District Council (ODC) councilors have welcomed the district’s new logo, which is close to completion.

The new logo was revealed on Wednesday by the ODC acting deputy council secretary, Mr Losika Kula during a full council meeting.

Mr Kula said the design of the logo followed the upgrading of ODC into a fully-fledged district in December 2022.

He said the council held consultative meetings with the Okavango communities to determine what the logo should consist of.

He said it was concluded that the logo should represent the lives and environment of the Okavango people by comprising at least about eight features such as the Okavango River, Tsodilo Hills, millet grain, elephant tusks, water lilies and canoe, which represent agriculture and wildlife in the area.

Mr Kula said the council received 19 design bids from contestants and only four were selected for final consideration.

“We looked at originality, neatness, innovation and creativity, harmony and a slogan that represent the Okavango District and its people well,” he said.

Welcoming the logo, Shakawe East councilor, Mr Lesedi Boy said it was overdue since it had to show that the district was independent from the North West District Council.

Mr Boy said the logo had features that represented the people of Okavango. He suggested that the new slogan should be ‘Re ipela ka makgobokgobo’.

Councillor for Gumare/Tubu South, Mr Keobinetse Matenanga said the logo design was a good design and only needed slight modifications. Councillor for Etsha 6, Mr Jeremiah Kangura concurred that the design was good and that the logo represented  the Okavango District well.

Other councillors suggested minor modifications of the logo to achieve a perfect design. ENDS
