03 Dec 2023
Boteti cluster water supply rehabilitation project is 44 per cent complete.
This is against 50 per cent progress that was expected by September.
Briefing Boteti District councillors in Letlhakane recently, development officer, Ms Patience Fanikiso said the project included villages of Kedia, Mokobaxane, Mopipi, Toromoja, Xere, Xhumo, Rakops and Mmadikola, and that it was expected to be completed in May 2024.
She said the six per cent delay was attributed to delays in completing the plant design as there was a change in the project scope to cater for future expansion.
The contract sum was about P700m and that expenditure currently stood at over P100m.
She noted that the project was awarded to China Civil Engineering Company.
Ms Fanikiso said challenges encountered included rocky terrain in some sections.
She also said negotiations with the Department of Environmental Affairs and Mines to mine suitable bedding material were ongoing. The project, she said, had created employment for 192 people comprising of 136 males and 56 females. In addition, she said the design and construction of a reverse osmosis plant and electrification of houses in Mmatshumo was 100 per cent complete.
She stated that the upgrading of the Mmatshumo pipeline and tank replacement budget was P6m, adding that it was funded by Water Utilities Corporation and entailed replacing old pipelines and the construction of a tank.
Ms Fanikiso said the upgrading of a booster station and construction of a pipeline at Letlhakane was at the award stage with construction expected to start in January 2024.
The project, she said, was intended to improve water supply in Letlhakane by filling up the distribution tank thus giving enough gravitational flow to reach households.
She noted that the Letlhakane reverse osmosis plant was budgeted at P30m to treat water from Lucara Mine, adding that construction was expected to start in January 2024. Ends
