GABORONE, November 11, (BOPA): The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has suspended , until further notice, the general voters’ registration,which was scheduled for November 13 to December 08.

The suspension follows resolution of the dispute in court where the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) successfully interdicted and restrained the IEC from preventing its agents from observing and monitoring the elections registration process.

A media statement from IEC states that the suspension is based on the commission’s belief and conviction that in law, political parties do not have to deploy their agents at polling stations during registration exercise to observe and monitor the process, as well as recording voters’ particulars and the serial numbers of registration books used.

The release says the commission will wait for a full ventilation of the issues in court when the matter is heard on November 15  at Francistown High Court.

“Appropriate measures will be put in place  to ensure that the exercise commences immediately after the resolution of the disputes in Court,” the IEC further states.
