Road accidents costly for Motor Vehicle Accident Fund
08 Nov 2023
Injuries and deaths resulting from road traffic accidents cost the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund around P200 million annually in claims.
MVA Fund’s Francistown branch manager, Mr Kite Mose-Nkala said this recently in Mahalapye during a stakeholder engagement workshop.
Mr Mose-Nkala said MVA Fund Act provided for provision for compensation, care, benefits, medical management and rehabilitation for victims of road traffic accidents, and accident prevention, adding that it also provided third party cover to all people involved in road crashes even if one was negligent.
He highlighted that all benefits were subjected to assessment and provisions in line with the MVA Fund Act.
Mr Mose-Nkala explained that the definition of MVA had been improved to ensure that only accidents that were proximate to the act of driving a motor vehicle were claimable.
He stated that the Fund no longer apportioned loss of income for those who contributed to the accident or were negligent. Ends
