The Vice President, Mr Slumber Tsogwane has reminded Batswana that in order to participate in the next year general elections, it is neccessary to register.
Elections are a foundation of a democratic government and a government is built by voters, Mr Tsogwane said.
The Vice President is addressing a kgotla meetings in Boteti West, to encourage eligible Batswana to register for elections in large numbers.
Addressing kgotla meetings in Xhumo and Mmadikola recently, Mr Tsogwane said Botswana was known for its reigning peace and tranquility and the only way the country could maintain the standard was for people to register for elections.
Many countries, he said were faced with political unrest and cautioned, “you cannot have a democratic and peaceful government if you fail to register for elections.”
He warned that the effects of such unrests affected everyone including those who did not vote.
Mr Tsogwane also said voter registration statistics should also increase as the population census increased.
He further explained that transfer after registration was possible provided the person transferring had a residence to a place of transfer.
He said those residing abroad had the right to vote, noting that there were 40 polling districts outside of the country.
In addition, he informed the residents that registration materials were not printed on time and that led to postponement of registration from October to November.
Mr Tsogwane was responsding to Mr Osimolotse Lekgoko of Xhumo who had asked if people residing in Gaborone could register where they were and transfer at a later stage. Ends
