Letlhakane murder incidents worry MP
31 Oct 2023
Recent gruesome murder incidents that were registered in Letlhakane prompted the area MP to convene kgotla meetings in Buuhe and Tawana wards last week.
Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe is worried that the murder incidents and other social ills would tarnish the image of Letlhakane.
He cited one of the murder incidents in Buuhe on Independence eve, where a group of men armed with axes and spears engaged in a street fight, as one of the extremely shocking incidents to have ever happened in Letlhakane.
Two lives are said to have been lost in the horrendous fight.
Another disturbing incident is said to have happened in Tawana ward recently where a young man murdered his brother by crushing his skull with a brick.
The Boteti East MP was also concerned about the drug and alcohol abuse in the village, which he said was the highest contributing factor to most crimes happening in Letlhakane.
Alcohol abuse, he said caused, a lot of road accidents, noting that just last week, some drunk men engaged in a car race through the village, which resulted in a horrific accident that claimed the life of an innocent taxi passenger.
Recently, there has been an influx of drugs such as methcathinone commonly known as cat, in the village, Mr Lelatisitswe said and urged parents to always keep a close eye on their children and monitor their behavior.
“We should as the community work together with the police to fight crime and drug abuse in our village.
It is worrisome as Letlhakane is now labeled by some as a lawlessness village,” said Mr Lelatisitswe.
He further said young people should strive for education than the alcohol and drugs life style.
Buuhe ward in particular, Mr Lelatisitswe said was always associated with delinquent behavior, where young people spent a lot of time at the shebeen and in the process committed crimes.
Therefore, he said with the festive season almost here, it was important for the community to be vigilant and on the look out for any mischievous behavior, which he said should be reported to the police immediately.
Meanwhile, various speakers at the meeting acknowledged bad behavior in Buuhe and called for increased police visibility in the area.
Some suggested dispatching of police Special Support Group members to patrol the ward at night, to deter mischievousness. ENDS
