28 Oct 2023

Voter trafficking is not only undemocratic, it is also a crime, Vice President has said.

Mr Slumber Tsogwane , who was addressing a kgotla meeting in Kedia on October 26 said trafficking of voters during election process was wrong, hence implored both candidates and voters to desist from such practices.

He said that sometimes incidents like that occurred because of lack voter education. He therefore, emphasised the need for intensified public education on election process.

"We have had situations on election day where people wanted to vote at wrong polling stations, wanting to vote where they did not register. That was probably because of lack of education or could have been some form of voter trafficking," said Mr Tsogwane.

The Vice President, who is also Member of Parliament for Boteti West addressed another kgotla meeting in Orapa the same day, where a resident, Mr Moroka Mogosi suggested that a law that confined voters to only vote at their permanent places of residence or where permanently employed be devised.

He said, with such a law in place, incidents of voter trafficking would be minimal.

Another speaker, Mr Bethel Muhinamone suggested that voter registration be made compulsory for eligible voters to address the issue of voter apathy.

Mr Mohinamone further said not only should voter registration be made compulsory, registering to vote and not voting should be criminalised.. Ends
