Warm welcome for RADP queen

04 Dec 2013

The inaugural Miss Remote Area Development Programme (RADP), Golobaka Lesoletsile received a welcome fit for royalty despite the drizzle that soaked the district leadership at Maun airport.

The 20-year-old beauty with an infectious smile from Mababe landed to a jovial crowd that had come to welcome her back home after she was crowned Miss RADP 2013.

Acting Batawana paramount chief, Kgosi Kealetile Moremi, Ngamiland district commissioner, Ms Bernadette Malala, NWDC chairman, Councillor Lathang Molonda, deputy council secretary, Mr Nigel Mangoye, councillors, officers, family and friends were among those who welcomed the beauty.

She beat 11 other girls from remote areas in the North West District Council to represent NWDC at the finals in Gaborone this past weekend where she went on to claim the national title.

Ms Malala said it was not surprising at all to have NWDC grabbing the title since most individuals who had gone on to make Botswana proud such as athletes as well as beauty queens were from the region.

She congratulated the lady on her achievement and in making the region proud. NWDC chairman, Cllr Molonda commended everyone involved in the project from the onset for a job well done especially since some people initially saw it as a waste of time.

He remarked that Golobaka is a testament of how important the pageant is, adding that the queen won P50 000 to carry out a project of her choice and P10 000 cash. He urged her to follow her dream of going back to school since education is vital if one is to have a better future. Cllr Molonda advised her not to hesitate to ask for advice because everyone will be looking to her as the first winner of this title, which is a great responsibility already.

He requested everyone not to turn their back on this child but, to instead support her to rise above the challenges she will encounter. Furthermore, he also expressed his gratitude at private companies that assisted in this venture for all their support as they want to maintain a healthy relationship between them and the council.

Molonda shamed those who neglect to contribute to the social ills that are visible in the community and encouraged them to cultivate a spirit of corporate social responsibility. For his part, NWDC chief social worker, Mr Uyapo Mafunye expressed his gratitude to the efforts of Ms Kemmonye Ngara who volunteered to train all the contestants who were in the remote areas from the first day, teaching and training amongst them.

An overwhelmed Golobaka also expressed her delight and re-enforced her promise to continue making the region proud and fulfilling her dreams. ENDS
