Meteorology warns of heat wave
23 Oct 2023
Department of Meteorological Services advises members of the public that there is a significant increase in temperatures over the country from yesterday afternoon.
A press release from the Department of Meteorological services says that the heat wave is expected to last until Friday.
“Very hot to extremely hot temperatures of 36 to 40 degrees Celsius are expected over most parts of the country,” says the release.
The release also states that the highest maximum temperatures of 39 to 42 degrees Celsius are expected over Chobe, Ngamiland, Ghanzi, North East and Central districts.
“These very high temperature conditions are due to the combination of persistent hot northerly air mass or wind flow from the low pressure cell at the surface and a high pressure system at medium level which prevent heat energy from escaping into the atmosphere,” it says.
Members of the public are therefore advised to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from these adverse weather conditions.
The statement further says these measures may include among others, drinking more water and hydrating fluids, avoiding prolonged stay under the sun, if at all possible stay under the shade and wearing wide-brimmed hat or umbrella.
The department says it will keep monitoring the significant increase in temperatures and will update the members of the public accordingly. Ends
