16 under investigation for exam paper leak

18 Oct 2023

The long and swift arm of the law has caught 16 people, whom police are now questioning in connection with recent leaks of the 2023 Botswana General Certificate of Secondary School Education (BGCSE) examination papers.

Officer Commanding District No.5, Senior Superintendent Onius Madziba told journalists here Tuesday that the 16 comprised 10 pupils and six adults.

They were all implicated in the leaking of the papers, he said. Senior Supt Madziba said they had seized some examination papers from the suspects and were questioning some members of the public and civil servants to establish what could have happened.

They were also working with the Department of Education and some private tutors to get to the bottom of the matter.

He said more arrests were likely as their preliminary investigations had extended to other places including Gumare, Gaborone, Letlhakane, Francistown and Selebi-Phikwe.

The suspects, he said, appeared to be a syndicate. The examination leak has forced government to postpone all BGCSE examinations while investigations continue. ENDS
