Fisherman dies as boat capsizes

A 28 year old fisherman lost his life after a hippo charged into and capsized a canoe in the middle of Thamalakane River near Shoshomoke settlement in the outskirt of Shorobe.
Confirming the incident, assistant superintendent Kgakgamatso Koboyatshwene said they received a report that two men drowned in the river while fishing using a canoe and the police and Botswana Defence Force (BDF) scuba divas rushed to the scene for a search and rescue.
Fortunately, a 31-year -old man who accompanied the deceased managed to swim and survived while efforts to rescue the remaining man from the river were in vain. The search, he said continued on Sunday and the scuba divas managed to retrieve the body around 1400 hours and was rushed to Letsholathebe Memorial hospital where he was certified dead.
Assistant superintendent Koboyatshwene noted that the deceased from Boseja ward in Maun and his next of kin had been informed about the incident. He said the incident was the second to be registered this year and warned members of the community to be vigilant when fishing in the river as it was infested by dangerous animals such as crocodiles and hippos.
